A bright green, spongy stripe over the field, a smell after rain, slow drains throughout the house, or water standing where the ground is otherwise dry. That is a field at or past the end of its life, and it is the expensive half of a septic system.
Why they fail here
Two causes, often together. A biomat — the bacterial layer that forms at the trench bottom — eventually seals the soil and stops accepting water. And the seasonal water table rises to meet the trench, leaving no unsaturated soil to treat the effluent. The second is a Lowcountry speciality and it is why fields here die younger than the national averages suggest.
Jetting, additives and the other things you have been offered
Hydro-jetting a field and pouring bacteria down the tank both buy time in a field that is on the edge. Neither reverses a sealed biomat and neither raises the ground you are sitting on. If somebody has quoted you a few hundred dollars to "restore" a field that is surfacing, what you are buying is a delay.
Conventional, mound or dosed
Where separation is adequate, a conventional gravity trench field is the cheapest answer. Where it is short, the field has to be lifted above the water table — a mound — or dosed under low pressure so a smaller area absorbs the load evenly. Mounds take more yard and cost several thousand dollars more, and the soil evaluation, not preference, decides which you get.
The replacement area

How long does a drain field last?
Twenty to thirty years is the usual figure nationally. In ground where the seasonal water table sits within a foot or two of the surface, fifteen to twenty is more realistic, and overloading shortens it further.
Can I build or park over a drain field?
No. Compaction destroys a field, and structures over it make it unrepairable. That includes sheds, above-ground pools, driveways and regular vehicle parking.
